FAUX FINISHES are used to mimic expensive materials!

Faux finishes were historically used to mimic expensive materials such as marble, stone, exotic hardwoods, and semi-precious stones, which added grandeur to interiors in larger houses.  

Faux finishes can look out of place in smaller houses and many of these special paint effects are today better suited to smaller items of furniture and accessories.
